Roots Quarterly Update

0

By the time you read this, no doubt relaxing on your Easter holiday, Roots (the Parish Youth Group) will have finished the spring term and be longing for the gloriously sunny days and long evenings of the upcoming summer term. You never know if this weather holds up we might even be able to start having the sessions outside!

We’ve been going through Jesus’ sermon on the mount over the last term looking at areas of poverty and injustice, forgiveness and sacrifice amongst other things. It’s been a really interesting series, raising issues of identity, self-esteem, discrimination and just how can you forgive someone who has really hurt you or let you down. These aren’t easy issues to cover as you can understand but we passionately believe in Jesus’ teaching about coming to set the captives free. To all of those of us who feel trapped, held back or angry by things that have happened to us in our lives, Jesus says come and give your cares and burdens to me – I want you to be free, free to move on, to love and be loved and to live your life to the fullest. If you can do it, being able to forgive your family, friends and even yourself is a wonderfully liberating experience.

As a group we were also fortunate enoughgo away forthe weekend to Cresswell Quay in Pembrokeshire back in February half term. A total of 27 of us spent the weekend looking at theidea of whether it was possible to see Godin your everyday life through a series of discussions, late night events and services. It was a time of real blessing with several members of the group coming forward for prayer and having a real breakthrough with their faith. It wasn’t all work, work, work, though as just about every other waking moment was spent on the onsite assault course or playing widegames down on the rolling sand dunes of Freshwater East.Looking forward to the summer term Roots will start back after Easter on the 26th April with a new topic and in all likelihood several new leaders. If all goes to plan there will be some real highlights to get excited about next term. There’s another weekend away planned to ‘Spree Wales’ and, fingers crossed, the chance to lock some members of the group up in the prison cells as Fairwater Police Station for the night. Why you ask? Just because we can! And seriously – wouldn’t you want to if you were in our shoes!

If you’re interested, the photos from our weekend away are available to view on the Parish website, just type ‘Roots’ into the search bar. I think that’s about it from us this time but if anyone wants any further information about the what we get up to or how to join please ring either Rob (07792 081776) or Sophie (07952 034471).

Youthwork in the Parish

0

Roots celebrated its 2nd anniversary in September and just by chance ended up getting a write up in the South Wales Echo for good measure! Fair play to the journalist, Ciaran Jones  who managed to turn up on the one week of the year where we were doing the annual pudding crawl. He couldn’t have timed that any better could he!

With a new term bring new personnel and we’ve said goodbye to Fr Anthony and those who’ve left for college, but welcome new leaders, Sarah Heyhoe and the returning Kristina Hitchcock to the groups as well as upwards of six new youngsters. With more people involved than at any other time God is continuing to take the group forward and grow us in faith and number.

This term we’re focusing on the theme of prayer across the two groups, covering everything from the how’s and why’s, thank you’s and sorry’s to the pains of unanswered prayer. We’d like prayer to be the foundation of everything we do here at Roots and across all the youthwork in the Parish so all of your prayers for us are appreciated. In particular we would be thankful of prayers for a spirit of togetherness, honesty and openness within the groups as the ability to share problems and support each other is one of the most vital aspects of everything we do.

If information on upcoming events or if you require any further information on youth work within the Parish please look at the Roots notice boards in the back of St David’s and St Tim’s or the Parish website (www.caerauwithely.org) or feel free to contact Rob (robert.palmer@mwhglobal.com) or Sophie (HallettS1@cardiff.ac.uk).

Roots is Back!

0

Hey!

Just wanted to let everyone know that Roots youth group is starting up again for the term. You might have been before, you might be moving up from Pathwayz kids club, or you might never have heard of us. Whichever you are, this letter tells you a bit more about Roots and what we do, and that you are welcome to come along.

The flyer on the back of this letter will let you know about the ‘taster/starter’ sessions we have over the next few weeks. So if you know you’re definitely coming then welcome back! If you haven’t been before and you’re not sure, why don’t you come along to one of the weeks and see what you think?

What is Roots?

Roots is a youth group run by volunteers from St Tim’s and St David’s church. It’s designed to run in smaller groups: think less ‘crazy running around,’ and more ‘chill-out, chat, watch films, eat cake, discuss, debate, go places, pray, make pizza, play games, be arty etc’. It’s a place to talk about God, life and stuff. Each term we have an overall theme and we look at different things each week. This term we’re going through the youth Emmaus course – so think big issues from poverty and forgiveness to dreams and passions. Like we said; God, life and stuff.

Who’s it for?                    Anyone aged 11-17

When is it?                       Thursday eve’s @ 7:30-9pm

Where is it?                      A living room somewhere across Ely and Caerau; depending on your group it could belong to Rob, Soph + Jon or Daz.

How do I get there?          If you have your own transport then you can make your own way there and back. If you don’t, we meet at St Tim’s every week and we’ll try to drop you back to your home afterwards.

Who runs it?                    There’s a multinational crew of English (Rob), Welsh (Soph & Jon Hallett, Daz Bradley & Jean O’Keefe) & New Zealanders (Tim & Kristina Hitchcock).

What’s the cost?               We have a donation pot that we bring out each week. It would be great if you can put some money in it but if you can’t don’t worry. 50p is about right.

Want more info?               If you have any questions, want to ask about a lift, or want to ask anything else about Roots then please ring Rob on 07792081776 or Daz on 07779920444. Or you can come along just before it starts on Thursday and chat to one of the team then.

We hope to see you guys soon!
